How to Track Your Habits the Smart and Simple Way

There’s an ancient proverb that says ‘the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step’. But what many people don’t realise is that the proverb is also assuming that you continue putting one step in front of the other. In other words, to arrive at our goal, we have to continue doing the work of putting one step in front of the other. We have to make it a habit to keep going forward.

But sometimes keeping that forward momentum can be hard when it isn’t easy to see the progress your making. When you feel like you’re putting one step in front of the other, but the scenery isn’t changing. When you’ve been slogging away and you’re not really sure what you’ve got to show for it.

This is where habit tracking comes in.

Why Should I Track Habits?

Tracking your habits provides that visual confirmation that you are making progress even when you can’t really see the results anywhere else.

Tracking our habits is important because if we want to change our life, we need to change our habits. That’s how powerful our habits are. They are the building blocks of our destiny. I once heard someone say…

  • Your thoughts determine your emotions.

  • Your emotions determine your actions.

  • Your actions determine your habits.

  • Your habits determine your character.

  • Your character determines your destiny.

What are the habits you need to build to create a destiny that inspires you? Once you have the answer to that question, you need to have a system to track those habits because “we mind what we measure” - in other words, we pay attention to the things we track. And if we’re not measuring our habit progress, we’re not really giving it the attention that it deserves, considering that our habits have such a big impact on our destinies.

Can’t I just use a paper tracker?
